Edible School Garden

Adams Elementary has been chosen by the Orfalea Foundation to receive a s'COOL GARDEN. The s’COOL GARDEN is being brought to Adams through a partnership between the Orfalea Foundation and the Center for Sustainability at Santa Barbara City College. Their mission is to develop the school garden, oversee it for one year and provide the training and materials so that we can link the garden to the curriculum and therefore enrich the educational experience for the children at Adams. We will be connecting students to the food they eat and the environment they live in.
The Garden will be approximately 1,000 square feet and will be located on the north side of the campus between the classrooms. They are planning on removing a large section of asphalt and turning it into a place of growing and learning. The students will be involved in the creation of this great living space from the very beginning. They will see the asphalt turn to dirt, learn how to create healthy soil, plant seeds and watch them grow, learn about composting, conservation and how delicious fresh vegetables and fruit taste when they are grown with care. The garden will also be a great place for the hands on learning of math, language, science, history and art.
Our Garden is currently in the planning stages and we hope to have a groundbreaking party soon.
A few parents have created an edible garden in the kindergarten area over the summer. This garden will also be used for ongoing curriculum enrichment.
