CYCLE KIDS
Julie Churchman, PE Specialist at Adams Elementary School, applied for and received one of seven $15,000.00 grants from CYCLEKIDS.org. Her "Every child at Adams will learn how to ride a bike" program will receive 10 Specialized bicycles, 25 bicycle helmets, CYCLEKIDS teaching curriculum, 50 student textbooks, CYCLEKIDS posters and parent information. Julie started the Adams cycling program last year during her final weeks of PE by teaching 1st and 2nd graders how to ride a bicycle. This year the 4th grade bicycle rodeo had 100% participation due to Julie's enthususiam and encouragement. Eight 4th graders also learned how to ride a bike successfully and safely during the bicycle rodeo. Julie is becoming a League of American Bicyclists Cycling instructor which means that she will be able to take students who have passed a street skills safety class off campus for bike rides during her after school program planned for next fall.
